Is it true that you two did things in the park?

That made me snort, and I was feeling petty enough to leave him on read. I tossed the phone back on the counter and sighed.

"Dante, try this, please," Dracon said, bringing me a ladle of a red gloopy mess.

"I'm not in the mood," I huffed.

"Dante. Come on, man. Try my soup," Dracon pleaded.

I blurt out a stream of curses but ultimately allowed him to hand me the ladle. I downed it and frowned.

Rum was right. There was too much ghost pepper sauce.

"Too much, like Rum said," I sighed. It actually was tragic. The soup was almost great. "What the hell is in that?"

"Goat blood, pig brain, witch warts, some drops of hellfire, a few sprigs of rosemary, bone broth, tomatoes, roasted garlic, black pepper, and ghost pepper sauce."

I nodded. "Next time, skip the sauce, and you might actually have something decent."

Rum burst out laughing. Dracon groaned and shook his head, going back to the stove.

"Alright, so what are we going to do about your new pet?" Rum asked.

I grabbed him by the collar and pulled him in, startling him. "Only I call him pet. He is my mate, you fuck wad. He will live here for eternity with me and love me until the end of time."

I let go of Rum, and he raised his eyebrows and moved around to the other side of the island. "Fucking possessive incubus. And he wants those things?"

"It doesn't matter if he does or doesn't," I snapped.

Both Dracon and Rum looked at me but knew better than to actually say anything.

"You seem a little tense, bud," Rum said.

"Rum, I swear to the gods—"

"Dante?"

Peter's voice echoed through the house.

Rum snickered as I flew from the kitchen, appearing in the bedroom in less than a second. I shut the door behind me, my worries melting away.

Peter was awake again, and the scent of arousal made my mouth water.

"What happened?" I asked, climbing into bed next to him.

Peter let out a heavy sigh and sank back down into the pillows. "I thought you had left me. For a moment, I didn't remember where I was."

"I thought you were sleeping hard," I said gently, pulling him into my arms.

Everything about him was perfect, and the thought of anyone ever hurting him made me feel angrier than I had in centuries. How long had it been since I had been in a bed with someone like this?

Had I even ever slept an entire night next to someone?

"You're very warm," he mumbled, pressing his face against me. He breathed in my scent, and I felt him calming.

I tried to relax a little, although now I had to decide if I was going to tell him about the vampire.

Peter had been running around, believing that he was safe from a real monster.

He curled in a little bit more, and I felt him fall into sleep again.

He wasn't safe, though. I was torn between trusting the Barista and believing my own instincts.

I blew out a sigh.
